Moxa and Governing Vessel 4

|

This type of moxa stick, called a moxa roll, looks like a long cigar.
The printed label on one end of the stick has been peeled off
so the herb will burn easily. |

Sparky enjoys his hay while Diana uses moxa over the top of the acupressure point known as Governing Vessel 4 (GV 4). The point is on the dorsal midline of the spine. It’s found in a small dip between the spinous processes (bony bumps) marking the tops of the second lumbar vertebra (L-2) and the third lumbar vertebra (L-3).
|

Diana points the burning end of the stick straight down at the area where GV 4 is located. She gently moves the stick up and down for approximately 45 to 60 seconds, keeping the hot burning coal at least one inch away from Sparky’s hair and skin. This indirect use of the herb was developed in China’s Ming dynasty (1368 -162 AD). |

The heat from the moxa warms the area of the point. This relaxes tissues in the area and activates the point.
