Twenty Minutes of Acupressure Helps Freckles Shift Emotionally and Physically
Richard Newton is a professional equine body worker from Atherton, California, who uses massage, Reiki, Tellington Touch (TTouch) to help horses and their riders. I met Richard when he attended my 3-day Bach flower class several years ago and we’ve stayed in touch. In August of 2010, Richard attended the first two days of the six-day Acupressure Level One course. Following the first weekend of class, Richard e-mailed me with this experience which illustrates the profound power of acupressure.
“Many thanks for a great weekend. I went for my regular riding lesson on Freckles, an 18-year-old Appaloosa gelding. I’ve known Freckles on and off for about 5 years and just this year started riding him in weekly lessons. Previously, I’d massaged or TTouched Freckles only if it was his idea. I’d gotten to a plateau where he would allow me to touch both shoulders and left hind and that’s all.
Freckles walks with stiffness in his hind end; His eyes are quite watery and his skin a little dry. He carries his neck sort of straight out bending only under protest. As to riding, he found cantering in either direction especially difficult. It was not just me; when experienced riders would ride him he would find it hard to comply.
Before the lesson I tried the acupressure linking method we learned in class this weekend. I used the calming points and Bladder points for about 20 minutes. The Bladder points were the most responsive and that was just on the left side!! When I linked Governing Vessel 4 with Conception Vessel 8 (Stomach 25), and Conception Vessel 17 he just totally relaxed, lowered his head and closed his eyes. I could not do too much or I would have had a too chilled horse before riding. He also licked me a couple of times after I worked on Bladder 49 - which he has never done.
In the lesson, after I had woken him up, Freckles was much more attentive than usual. He walked out without a load of niggling and our transitions from walk to trot were basically instant. We really had a great connection. This connection has improved as I’ve continued to use the acupressure. Freckles trusts me much more. He is now receptive to bodywork all over his body and in general much more cooperative with me. Under saddle, I only have to think canter now and he is there. Also his skin and eyes have improved.
Overall, I am amazed how in such a small space of time the acupressure helped me improve Freckles performance, his health and our relationship.”
